Overview

Realizing that an organization's CMMI level affects an organization's success on requests for proposals (RFPs), your CIO wants to get the software development processes to CMMI level 3. Your organization has started developing software applications and database systems for their customers. The CIO wants to ensure that the software development and database development processes are being properly managed and audited, and he wants to ensure that the organization begins taking the necessary steps to progress to CMMI level 3. In preparation for your response, review the CMMI information.

IT managers will commonly manage software development and systems integration activities. Write a 3–5 page paper in which you:

1. Describe the software engineering process, the challenges in managing software development activities, and the potential interface issues from the software development perspective.
2. Analyze the CMMI levels and define a road map that the organization will need to follow to get their software development processes to CMMI level 3. Note: This is important because the CMMI level that an organization achieves impacts their software development reputation.
3. Explain the auditing tasks that must be performed in order to achieve level 3.
4. Determine the continuous assurance auditing activities that the organization will need to implement to help achieve CMMI level 3.
5. Analyze the ITIL service management guidelines and principles.
6. Examine how ITIL service management practices relate to CMMI levels and continuous service auditing.

Design a Strategy for Securing the Operation of a Web Application
Overview
Your team received an assignment to develop and deliver a new company Web
application for outsourced suppliers to use as they help support your company’s
production resources. The IT director recently returned from an OWASP conference in
India and insists that the app will have strong security. As he walked out the door from
your initial project briefing the IT director said, “I do not want to wait 200 days after an
exploit to hear about it. If something happens, I want to know yesterday.”

Instructions
The project specs require a multi-page design. The app will need to provide an interface
to your company’s supply database for reading and entering data remotely as well the
ability to contact, via the e-mail server, your company supply managers. In an effort to
save money, management decided that the team will use some open source software
library modules.
Fully discuss, in 3–5 pages, the process that your team would follow to create and
deliver that Web application.
1. Provide at least six steps in the SDLC during which security strengthening behaviors will be applied.
2. Explain the specific security relevant actions taken during each step to include the people involved, the
considerations taken, and security assurance methods used.
3. Identify and briefly explain at least three different security testing methods and indicate which methods
analyze the app’s front end, source code, or vulnerabilities while the app is running. Justify when you
would use each method.

Week 5 Discussion

Every project manager understands risks are inherent in projects, deliveries are delayed, accidents happen, people get sick, etc. No amount of planning can overcome risk, or the inability to control chance events.  Risk information is normally documented in what is called, a risk management plan.

  Chapter 7, in your course text outlines the processes required to develop a risk management plan.  The PMBOK, starting on page 395 (Risk Management Knowledge Area) also describes a risk management process to develop a risk management plan.  Use either source, but develop / describe a project risk management plan for the project you defined earlier in this course.
