Communication is a universal skill and one you will continue to refine as you progress throughout your career. This assignment asks you to use what you’ve learned in the first three weeks of the course about actively listening and responding in the workplace.

Worried about where to start?

The good news is that you’ve already laid the foundation with the webtext activities in Chapters 1 and 2.

This assignment will use what you wrote in those practice activities to help you record your response. Your goal for this assignment is to: Practice your communication skill. You will do this by applying active listening and oral communication strategies to reply effectively to a voicemail from your boss.

In Chapter 3 of the webtext, submit your assignment using the following steps: STEP 1: Revisit the scenario below.

Scenario:

On Monday morning, you check your phone and discover you have a voicemail from your boss, Sara, about a customer service issue. Your boss is worried because one of the company’s most important clients has not received their shipment. While she acknowledges it isn’t your fault, she needs you to work quickly to resolve the issue. She has outlined some tasks that must be completed in order for you to get things back on track—and fast.

STEP 2: Listen to your boss’s voicemail located in Chapter 1 of the webtext.

STEP 3: Review the summary you created in Week 2 or create one now.

STEP 4: Based on your notes from Step 3, record a voicemail to your boss using the audio template in the webtext. The voicemail should be 1 minute or less.

STEP 5: Listen to your voicemail recording using the audio template in the webtext. If needed, record your message again to make sure:

  • it includes the main points from your boss’s message.
  • it uses language and tone appropriate for a response to your boss.
  • it does not use overly emotional language. (Refer to Weeks 1–3 in your webtext to get information about using the appropriate structure, language, and tone for your audience and purpose.)

STEP 6: Submit your response to the Week 3 assignment using the audio template in the webtext. Please note: You must click the blue Submit for Grading button to submit your assignment!
