Business Week 4 Discussion

This week we are covering textbook topics found in Chapter 4, "The Nature of Capitalism," (beginning on page 117) and Chapter 5, "Corporations," (beginning on page 156). These chapters identify four key features of capitalism: the existence of companies, the goal of making a profit, a competitive market, and the ownership of private property.

https://hwacer.com/Tutorial/business-week-4-discussion/

Respond to the following:

  • How do these four features of capitalism relate to you as an individual? Do you feel that capitalism is consistently fair to both small-business owners and corporations in relation to each of the four key features? Explain your thoughts

Capitalism is an economic and political system

Capitalism is an economic and political system

Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. Socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates for the means of production, distribution, and exchange being owned or regulated by the community as a whole (1).

In this assignment, you will write a 2–3 paragraph essay comparing capitalism and socialism:

Assignment 1.1: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay - Part I

Assignment 1.1: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay - Part I

Prewriting
When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the "Believing Game." The Believing Game is about making the effort to "believe" - or at least consider - the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
In Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you will first read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes: "The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful" at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf. Next, you will review the Procon.org Website in order to gather information. Then, you will engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
Note: In Part II of the assignment (due Week ), you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas.

https://hwacer.com/Tutorial/phi-210-assignment-1-1-conflicting-viewpoints-essay-part-i/

Part I - Prewriting: Follow the instructions below for this prewriting activity. Use complete sentences and adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
1. Select one (1) of the approved topics from the www.procon.org Website and state your position on the issue.
2. From the Procon.org Website, identify three (3) premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section - whichever section opposes your position.
3.For each of the three (3) premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these "believing" questions suggested by Elbow:

  1. What's interesting or helpful about this view?
  2. What would I notice if I believed this view?
  3. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?"

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Applications of Epidemiology—A Case Study

Applications of Epidemiology—A Case Study

Applications of Epidemiology—A Case Study
Scenario
The situation at the regional Good Health Hospital has become overwhelming since the outbreak of
Escherichia coli (E. coli) in Ward 10 on the second floor. It appears that there are six cases of the disease.
To better understand the situation, communication with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
has revealed that this particular bacterium can be found in many everyday items. The CDC recommends
that investigation begin in the hospital kitchens because E. coli can be transmitted via contaminated
vegetables, as well as delicatessen meats such as salami and other cold cuts. The following table shows
the number of cases identified so far:
Case Age Gender
1 23 M
2 21 F
3 15 M
4 42 F

Applications of Epidemiology—A Case Study

After a meeting yesterday with the chief administrator, Joe Wellborn, it has been decided that the
litigation issues with one of the patients may need further information to determine whether the
patient was already symptomatic with the bacteria before admission. Research has indicated that
hospitals operating in the Tampa Bay area have been known to have cases of E. coli contamination. This
substantiates the need for further investigations by the county health department. Due to the severity
of the cases and the potential for further spread, it is recommended that the hospital seek alternative
vending services because the present suppliers cannot verify sanitation protocols for their products. In
conclusion, the study done at Good Health Hospital has indicated that the E. coli outbreak was in fact
caused by spoiled food from the cafeteria.

As a social science researcher working for the regional hospital, you are placed in charge of contacting
the department of health (DOH) from your home state, as well as the CDC for statistical data on
nosocomial diseases (diseases starting in a hospital) that frequently cause illness at your health care
facility. Using information from both agencies, evaluate the data on common nosocomial diseases and
compile a treatment contingency plan for dealing with the hospital infections.

Assignment Instructions

Write a 5–6 page evaluation report in which you do the following:
1.Analyze Good Health Hospital’s records and itemize recent nosocomial infections that occurred within
the past year. In your report, categorize the different parameters (that is, person, time, place, ethnicity,
and gender) used in the compilation of data into the information summative..
2.Propose at least six questions for the health care administrator at Good Health Hospital regarding
potential litigation issues with infections from the nosocomial diseases. In the report, rationalize the
logic behind the six questions..
3.Identify a targeted audience within Good Health Hospital and prepare an implementation plan based
on a hypothetical meeting with the hospital health care administrator. Propose four steps that will be
useful in the final implementation plan..
4.Suggest at least five recommendations to the department head based on the steps taken in the
implementation plan. Provide a rationale for suggestions..
5.Design a safety protocol itinerary that must be placed in public access areas of the hospital, using
these approved recommendations..
6.Use at least four peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment. These must come from journal
sources. Note: Fact Sheets, Wikipedia, and nonacademic websites do not qualify as academic resources..

Intel made large loyalty payments to HP in exchange for HP buying most of their chips from Intel instead of rival AMD. AMD sued Intel under the antitrust laws, and Intel settled the case by paying $1.25 billion to AMD.

Address the following in your discussion post:

  • What incentive conflict was being controlled by these loyalty payments?
  • What advice did Intel ignore when they adopted this practice?
    • How did the Robinson-Patman Act apply to their practice?
  • Why did they ignore the advice?

For this discussion, you are going to advise Mr. Scharf on a key issue.

  • What about the incentive system employed by Wells Fargo resulted in massive creation of fake accounts by the retail operation? And why did it only get worse from there?

As you dig into this issue, remember Froeb's rule from Chapter 1: "Avoid the temptation to think about the problem from the employee's point of view . . . [and ask] how does the organization give employees enough information to make good decisions and the incentives to do so?" (1).

Your post for this discussion should answer the question above and address components of motivation and incentive in order to present Mr. Scharf with reasonable and evidence-supported advice on this issue.

There is frequent confusion about the terms asymmetric information, moral hazard, and adverse selection. Asymmetric information is the cause, while moral hazard and adverse selection are the outcome.

For this discussion, your focus will be to think through what these have to do with hiring a police officer.

Instructions

Consider the following statement:

Many police officer positions require the applicant to have a college degree even though the tasks of a police officer rarely call upon college course material.

In your discussion post, address the following:

  • Why don't police departments increase their applicant pool by dropping this requirement?
    • How does this relate to asymmetric information, moral hazard, and adverse selection?
    • How do Type I and Type II errors (and the human tendency to be risk-averse) relate to your answer?

This week's discussion focuses on decision error costs with regard to hiring new talent. Use the provided scenario as a basis to inform your post on decision-making impacts and Type I and Type II errors.

Instructions

The HR department is trying to fill a vacant position for a job with a small talent pool. Valid applications arrive every week or so, and the applicants all seem to bring different levels of expertise. For each applicant, the HR manager gathers information by trying to verify various claims on résumés, but some doubt about fit always lingers when a decision to hire or not to hire is made.

For your discussion post, address the following within the context of the scenario:

·         What are the Type I and Type II decision errors costs?

·         Which decision error is more likely to be discovered by the CEO?

·         How does this affect the HR manager's hiring decisions?

What is game theory, and how do businesses use games?

In your Managerial Economics textbook, we consider a sequential-move game in which an entrant is considering entering an industry in competition with an incumbent firm (see Figure 15-1). There are several possibilities of how this sequential game will be played. We want to use the Froeb rule of look ahead and reason back.

Instructions

For your discussion post, use Figure 15-1 from the textbook as your starting point to address the following:

  • Can, and how does, the entrant succeed?
  • Is the incumbent ever in control of this game?
    • You may wish to review the old game known as Duopoly, as well as Antoine-Augustin Cournot, to help inform your post.

You have a package service using a 100 lb capacity bike trailer for anything weighting up to 10 lbs. As a way to introduce the new package service when you implemented the small package service you charged the same price for packages as parcels. Your sale manager is getting her MBA and has suggested you might consider bundling as a way to boost profits. a) Here are the customer preferences and your cost are $100 for the first booking and $50 for each additional booking. Compare the profit with and without bundling. Which strategy should be used? Show your calculations. b) The sales manager also suggests that there is a possibility that some customers will never bundle. She says in some cases it might be possible to bundle and also offer each customer only the trip they prefer, a practice known as mixed bundling. You know that about 21% of your customers decline cruises because of sea sickness. At least 12% decline the casino trip saying they don’t believe in gambling. As a rough estimate you initially estimate that approximately 33% of your customers will never bundle. Will mixed bundling increase profits? You must show that calculations that support your conclusion.

Context

The idea that transactions in a marketplace work like an invisible hand is to some extent the idea that when a person chooses to buy an item at a given price, they are happy with the deal. There is no coercion. If the person really does not like the deal, they simply walk away.

This week's discussion will give you an opportunity to explore direct and indirect price discrimination within the context of a hypothetical scenario.

Instructions

For this discussion, use the following hypothetical scenario as the basis for your response:

Your business partner is strongly opposed to your proposal to charge your largest customers lower prices for your web-based services than you will charge your smaller customers. She is arguing it is unethical, unfair, and possibly illegal.

Address the following in your discussion post:

  • Make a case that both groups of customers will be satisfied with the deal and that this is a perfectly legal form of pricing in a business-to-customer relationship.
    • What degree is this type of price discrimination?
    • How will the plan increase revenue?
    • Why will both groups of customers be satisfied with the deal?
    • Why is this a legal form of pricing?
  • Use evidence from your textbook or other reputable sources to support your case to your business partner.

Instructions

Review the two groups of firms below:

  • Group 1: the accommodations industry (e.g., Hilton, Marriott Bonvoy, InterContintental Hotel Group).
  • Group 2: the wireless telecommunications industry (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile).

  • Which of these groups operates in a monopolistic competitive industry? Which operates in an oligopoly?
    • How did you determine the classification of each group? That is, what are the key characteristics of each group that indicate the type of industry it operates in?
  • Chose one of the groups and use Porter's Five Forces to analyze the pressures on profits for your chosen group's firms.
    • If you want to dig deeper into how one of the firms views the challenges it faces, you might want to look at the firm's investor page.

In this week's discussion your are going to be the CEO of a company.  In anticipation of the upcoming quarterly disclosure of profits, you prepare your Board of Directors for the challenge that cost-push inflation having on profits.  Please make yourself CEO of only one of these hypothetical companies.

All America Grocery Inc - We serve communities in the middle of the income market providing low prices for all basic grocery needs. Our modest income consumers expect goods deals on good quality foods.  The Covid-19 pandemic has put upward pressure on the price of everything we sell. We have also experience rising cost in every aspect of our operation as we have to put extra resources in to protecting both our employees and the public.  We are both fortunate and unfortunate that the price elasticity of demand for food is .20.

https://hwacer.com/Tutorial/eco-550-week-3/

Very Big US Auto - Very Big US Auto is one of the oldest and one of the largest auto manufacturers of autos in the US.  Very Big US Auto's supply chain is highly dependent components manufactured in China and assembled in the US.  Like the US economy the Chinese continue to have major stoppage in production due to Covid-19.  Additionally manufacturing facilities like ours must take extra precaution to keep workers safe.  Costs are rising we are experiencing rising costs.  Very Big US Auto know that demand is relatively elastic with a price elasticity of demand of 1.2. We also know that the supply of auto is relatively inelastic and all our competitors are facing the same cost increase.

Big Time Entertainment - Big Time Entertainment is a nationwide firm providing movies, arcades and other entertainment venues such as bowling and roller skating.  Our operations have been heavily impacted during the Covid-19 pandemic.  On reopening we have been faced with a host of regulations that have greatly increased our cost of operation, everything to operating far below our optimal number of patron to higher cost for cleaning and other measure to protect the public and our employees.  Price elasticity of demand is 1.6 and we are also face with competitors, online entertainment and gaming, that are not experiencing these cost pressures.

Now explain:

  • Is the demand curve for your product relatively elastic, inelastic or unitary elastic?  Demonstrate for your company's product, by how much the quantity demanded will change if you pass on a 10% increase in cost. In other words, show your calculation of the percentage change in the quantity demanded given a 10% change in your price. You must provide a calculations showing the percentage change in quantity demanded.
  • Given your company's and price elasticity of demand and the industry supply/competitive environment you face prepare a statement for your board as to the potential impact on profits.   Who will pay the larger share of the cost increases, your firm or your customers?

Communicating effectively can often help us manage conflict and overcome challenges in the workplace. Review the following scenario and answer the questions below.

https://hwacer.com/Tutorial/com-100-week-9-discussion/

Your bags are packed for a family vacation to Jamaica, and you leave in three days. Then, your co-worker calls the office to say she can’t come to work this week because her child has the flu and she has no one to babysit. Your supervisor says you have to cover that co-worker's shift AGAIN for the fourth time in two months. Unfortunately, if you cover the shift, you will miss your vacation, and you will lose the money you spent on it. How would you manage this workplace obstacle using the skills and tools you’ve been learning throughout this course? As a reminder, those skills are communication, technology, productivity, and self and social awareness.

Your professor assigned you to work in a small group with three other students who you’ve never worked with before. She expects each person to participate equally and to complete the work by the designated deadline. However, two of the members are never available to meet in person due to their busy schedules. Using what you’ve learned about technology and its place in improving communication and collaboration, how will you use your technology skill to identify tools that will improve your group’s communication and collaboration?
